This no-holds-barred comedy roast series hits Africa for the first time. For those not sure what it entails, a known celebrity is placed on stage while comedians, actors and other peers pay homage to them with anecdotes and dirty laundry that pull no punches.

With South Africa in low supply of international superstars with checkered pasts and controversial social and political skeletons in the closet (or in public domain), picking a local personality many can identify (for good and bad reasons) could not have been that easy – but then again, with just a handful of these tabloid subjects, it was probably not that hard at all! (Don't think Charlize Theron will volunteer).

So, what local entertainer could rally up an equal split of love and hatred from fans and enemies? In this first Roast case, it is Steve Hofmeyr, soap- and sometimes movie star, singer, talk show host and politically outspoken Afrikaner.

With Trevor Noah as roast-master, the digs are not limited to Hofmeyr (strapped on-stage to a BBQ dome converted into a hot seat as it were). The entire roasting panel are open for attack, and they don't just go below the belt, but literally into all orifices. Race is also not taboo.
Some of the roasters are less successful than other, with Vlismas, Noah and De Vries in the top ranks.

The early conservative South African entertainment industry was never this extreme. Very funny, rude, crude and audacious.
Not for anyone who gets offended easily.
The double disc includes the original TV broadcast and a more extreme extended version, plus extras before and after the show, and interview with Hofmeyr on the experience, a Leon Schuster homage and more.
